Business Web Hosting Answers

  1. What is web hosting?

If you want to get your business online then you need 3 things – a website design, a domain name and suitable web hosting. Every website takes up space (similar to physical storage space) images, text, videos and files all require storage space. This is where hosting comes in. You rent some hosting webspace on a server where you can store the files for your website. Then when people visit your domain name they automatically download the files necessary to display your website to their computer.

  2. So hosting is just storage space for my website?

Essentially yes, but it is much more than that. It is a secure place for your website to be stored. Without suitable hosting no one will be able to visit your website and you could miss out on potential customers.

  3. Why should I use TheCompanyWarehouse.co.uk web hosting service?

Our hosting service includes high speed connections to a secure UK based data centre. As you can see from our web hosting page, our packages contain a great deal of features that you need for a low cost. We've even thrown in added bonuses like 3 months free hosting and a FREE .co.uk domain names with the premium hosting packages.

  4. What does it mean to have hosting in UK data centres?

Other hosting companies may offer “cheap” hosting services that look good, but if their data centre (server location) is located outside the UK that might lead to a bad user experience for both you and your customers. International data centres located in India or Australia (for example) would not be able to deliver the files of your website as quickly as one in London or elsewhere in the UK. We use secure, local data centres with a high speed connection to ensure you get the best possible service from your hosting. UK based data centres also allow us to easily fix any problems that occur. Specialised staff are on hand to deal with any errors or problems with the servers hosted through us.

  5. I'm in a hurry. How long will it take to setup my hosting

If you order hosting online with us then setup is usually instant. You will have access to your hosting control panel where you can access a range of tools and gadgets to easily manage your website and your hosting in general. Ordering over the phone may delay things slightly, but we can provide support to help you get started.

  6. Do I need any technical knowledge to use your web hosting service?

  7. I already have a website designed, can I upload it to my hosting with you

Yes. If you have the files then you can use the FTP account system or the hosting control panel to upload files to your hosting. We can provide guidance on how to do this.

  8. My hosting is currently with another hosting provider, can I transfer my hosting to The Company Warehouse?

Yes. As long as your old hosting company allows it you can transfer you hosting and domain to us. We will have your website up and running as quickly as possible.

  9. Is there a limit on website traffic on my hosting?

No. Some web hosting companies put a limit on the number of visitors a website can have each month. This is because every time a visitor comes to your site they download the website files to their computer. The more users means the more times this happens. This takes up valuable bandwidth and can cause slowdowns. Our hosting is a high speed service and so there is no need to worry.

  10. I've ordered hosting with you, how do I access my control panel?

Access to your hosting control panel is gained through a secure link to your domain address. This link will look something like this:
https://www.yourcompanyname.co.uk:8443/ (with “yourcompanyname” being replaced with your company name or domain name) please note the ‘s’ in https (this is for a secure connection) and 8443 at the end of the address. This will take you to a secure login page where you can access your hosting control panel.

  11. Where do I get the username and password for my hosting control panel?

The login username and password for your hosting control panel should have been sent out to you by our support team at the point of ordering, including a guide on how to access and use the basic functions of the hosting control panel. If you have not received your e-mail or if for any reason you cannot access your hosting control panel with the login details supplied, please send an email to web-support@thecompanywarehouse.co.uk and a member of our team will contact you as soon as possible with the details. FTP clients are perfectly secure tools to transfer (large) files from your PC to the hosting server with little fuss.

  13. I want to use an FTP client to upload files to my webhosting is this possible?

Yes. At the time of order you should have been supplied with FTP (File Transfer Protocol) details for your hosting. Most FTP clients merely require:

Host – the website address/domain address where your website is hosted.
Username – your assigned and secure username.
    Password – your generated/secure password.

Yes. New e-mail addresses can be set up through your hosting control panel. Please see the hosting control panel guidance initially sent to you when your hosting activated, it contains a easy-to-understand guide on how to set up new e-mail addresses. If you get stuck you can add a support ticket (request for help) through the menu on your control panel and someone will contact you as soon as possible.

  18. Which e-mail addresses should I set up through my hosting?

Most businesses opt for the obvious e-mail addresses to start with sales@yourcompany.com, Info@yourcompany.com, support@yourcompany.com. Even with our most basic hosting package (‘Starter’) you get 500 different addresses which could potentially be setup. Just remember to keep on top of them so e-mails from customers don’t get lost!

  19. Is there any form of anti-spam facilities on my hosting?

Yes. Spam Assassin Anti-Spam and Anti-Spam GreyListing are both available on your hosting package and can be set up and managed from your hosting control panel. These two tools should cut down on the amount of spam (junk mail) you receive in your inbox but unwanted sources. Grey listing automatically rejects e-mails from unknown sources on the first try, which will prevent most spam e-mails from getting through as genuine e-mail servers will retry, but spam servers won't. While Spam Assassin tests incoming e-mail on a number of areas to detect spam messages versus genuine e-mails.

  20. Is access to POP3/SMTP/IMAP e-mail available through your hosting

Yes. You can access these different kinds of e-mail services through our hosting packages and set them up according to your personal preference through the hosting control panel. Webmail access is also available meaning you can access your e-mail anywhere there's an internet connection and a web browser.

  21. Is there a limit on my hosting webspace?

Yes, each of our packages has a limited amount of webspace (storage space) for your website. Our basic hosting service includes 10GB of storage. This is enough storage to literally store thousands of images. Videos obviously take up more space and your website as a whole might take up a fair amount of storage space on your hosting. However, you can always choose a slightly larger package if you are concerned. Webspace is limited so if you reach your limit you won't be able to go over it as the server will stop you from uploading any more files. You can upgrade at any time if you feel the need or if you plan to expand your website further.

  22. Can I setup a subdomain on my hosting?

Yes. Through the hosting control panel (depending on your hosting package) you can setup a subdomain for your website. People use a subdomain as a way of running a blog, support area or other area of the business website without diluting or taking away from the content of the main site. A subdomain is a subfolder of the storage on your hosting, which in essence acts as a subfolder of your website. As an example, we use a subdomain for our blog (http://blog.thecompanywarehouse.co.uk).

  23. Can I see stats from my website?
