A PSD file is the native Adobe Photoshop file format. Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard bitmap graphics program. These files support features such as editable text, transparency, masks, layers, etc.
Though a PSD is native to Adobe Photoshop these files can also be opened in other bitmap graphics programs.
